Bitmine Chairman Tom Lee warned that the sharp decline in the South Korean stock market could negatively impact the cryptocurrency market. Lee specifically noted that forced sell-offs stemming from margin trading could put pressure on crypto assets in the short term.
Lee, commenting on the situation via the social media platform X, stated that forced sales related to leveraged transactions were occurring at brokerage firms in South Korea. According to Lee, the effects of these developments in the stock market could extend to other assets held by investors.
Lee noted that South Korean investors hold a significant share in the cryptocurrency market, and said that losses in stocks could be reflected in the cryptocurrency market. Therefore, he stated that investors may face a challenging period in the short term.
In leveraged trading, forced sell orders occur when investors close their positions if their collateral falls below predetermined levels. Such transactions can increase selling pressure in the markets, leading to more volatile price movements.
Meanwhile, a notable development occurred on the South Korean stock exchange. At approximately 00:47 UTC today, the exchange activated its “sell-side sidecar” mechanism, temporarily halting sell orders.
The mechanism was reportedly implemented for the first time in about two months. The Sidecar system aims to limit the impact of volatility in trading by temporarily halting scheduled sell orders during sharp market movements.
Lee’s remarks highlight the potential impact of selling pressure in traditional financial markets on crypto assets. However, the extent to which the decline in the South Korean stock market will affect cryptocurrency prices remains unclear.
