The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is preparing to work on new rules that could directly impact the digital asset market amid ongoing uncertainty in Congress regarding cryptocurrency regulations. According to Bloomberg, the SEC is preparing to announce significant cryptocurrency regulatory plans following the Senate’s delay of the CLARITY Act’s legislative process until at least September.
According to the SEC’s official calendar, the agency will hold an open meeting on August 14, 2026, at 10:00 AM ET (5:00 PM). The meeting will consider whether to propose new rules for creating an issuance regime specifically designed for investment contracts involving certain crypto assets.
In a statement regarding the meeting, the SEC indicated that the agency would consider publishing proposals for new rules that could create a specific regulatory framework for crypto assets under certain investment contracts. This initiative by the SEC could pave the way for a clearer regulatory structure on how crypto assets can be issued in capital markets.
The SEC’s move comes at a time when the Senate process for the CLARITY Act, seen as comprehensive regulation of the cryptocurrency market, is slowing down.
The Senate postponed the critical vote on the bill until after the August recess, with a procedural vote scheduled for September 15th at the initiative of Senate Majority Leader John Thune. The bill needs 60 votes to pass. However, disagreements persist between Republicans and Democrats on issues such as ethics guidelines, anti-money laundering provisions, and stablecoin returns.
