The White House has reportedly contacted Chinese officials to arrange a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The Trump administration sees the meeting as a necessary step toward reviving trade talks, according to two senior White House officials who spoke to CNN.
Trump is not currently considering reimposing the 145% tariffs on China, the officials said, but warned that could change if Xi Jinping fails to stick to the agreement reached in Geneva earlier this month.
Trump's economic advisors, on the other hand, stated that they conveyed to the President that “other tools could be used, there are different ways to harm China” if China does not fully comply with the agreement.
It was noted that one of these tools was to implement export controls on products of Chinese origin and that this authority could be used by the Ministry of Commerce.
President Trump targeted China in a harsh post on the Truth Social platform this morning, saying, “China has completely violated our agreement.”
